As many of you already know it’s playoff season for NFL football. The NFL is an institution I love to hate and hate the fact that I love. They were an unethical non-profit promoting other unethical non-profits until 2015. The Super Bowl is, in many ways, a homage to everything that’s wrong with America: Excessive advertising, sensationalism, geo-political rival and at the end of it all we’re expected to celebrate a bunch of millionaires getting a ring and a free gas-guzzling truck they don’t need. Still, I love the game, and have found myself many Sundays perched at a sport’s bar like a seagull at a hot dog stand.
Last weekend the Green Bay Packers had an epic finish against the Dallas Cowboys. In this video, a guy switches his team allegiance from Dallas to Green Bay, quite a significant decision looking at the two teams.
The Dallas Cowboys. America’s team. They’re America’s team because the Pittsburgh Steelers didn’t want to be. They wanted to be the World’s Team, which makes sense since Dan Rooney was the ambassador to Ireland. Dallas on the other hand, is a-ok with some good ol’ home cooked nationalism. ‘Murica’s team, we’re good! And let’s not forget Dallas’ home state, Texas. With exception to Austin, Texas is about as progressive as a dittohead with a 700 Club subscription that protests outside of Planned Parenthood every weekend. The division is so sharp that the identity of a blue dot in a sea of red is commonly the described as the “Austin of X.” For example, I went to college at Indiana University, Bloomington is considered the Austin of Indiana…Nashville was starting to become a more progressive town when I lived there, some were even calling it the Austin of Tennessee, and so on.
The Green Bay Packers. Socialism working for the people. Green Bay is owned by its fans. Green Bay barely has a skyline, has brutal winters, yet maintains a by-the-people franchise that happens to be arguably among the most respectable in the league. Many of the players embrace this accessibility as well. Brett Favre was known to frequent the local bars and of course there’s the legendary Lambeau leap, after all, the fans did actually do their part in making that touchdown possible.
This video is brief and most likely a fake. But the point is people switch team allegiances all the time, and if they can switch team allegiances they can switch political allegiances too. I’ve mentioned in other articles what an amazing recruiting tool Donald Trump is going to be for the left, these next four years will be a Democrat-making machine if and only if the Democrats can manage to do one thing in 2018: WIN. Nobody jumps on the bandwagon of a losing franchise unless it’s to sport a team ironically and ironic merchandise won’t help Democrats, votes will. Democrats: Take a lesson from Aaron Rodgers and don’t give up when the going gets tough. While you’re at it take a lesson from the Green Bay Packers and actually be progressive.Click here for reuse options!
