Vague Generalities and Empty Rhetoric We Can Believe In

President Obama’s feckless speech to the nation was proof positive that America, like the sea life washing up on the shores of the Gulf, is nothing but a carcass from which corporate vultures pick and discard.
At one time I was convinced if anyone could restore the middle class after the 30-year assault of Reaganomics, it was a Barack Obama – man of color who was able to overcome all obstacles to become President in this arrogantly ignorant, sophomoric and racist nation.
If he was clever enough to accomplish that feat, I concluded, he could certainly out maneuver the economic royalists who have our government co-opted as an appendage to their own affairs.
Like many others, I was hoping that Obama’s first Oval Office address to the nation was going to be a turning point where the President would finally deliver the campaign promises of “change we can believe in.”
What we got, instead, was a useless display of what Dan Froomkin called, “vague generalities and empty, convictionless rhetoric” regarding a catastrophic national emergency that requires actual solutions. It evident that waiting for President Obama to discard his Democrat-in-Name-Only advisers like Rahm Emmanuel and become this generation’s FDR is like “Waiting for Godot.”
To the disgust of the millions who supported his election, Obama has done nothing but capitulate to Republicans who outright hate him, appease corporate criminals who need to be dethroned, and continue the policies of the Bush Administration that he promised to “change.”
Jon Stewart breaks down the many campaign promises the President has failed to live up to:

After last night’s worthless display, I awoke this morning to find an email from the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee waiting for me in my inbox. On the back of the President’s speech, the email was soliciting contributions by lamenting that the BP disaster has “awakened corporate special interests” and won’t I join with Democrats to “fight?”
Yes… they actually said, “awakened” corporate special interests…. As if this was a new phenomena rather than the cancer that eating the heart of democracy since Thomas Jefferson warned in a letter to George Logan in 1816, “I hope we shall…crush in its birth the aristocracy of our moneyed corporations, which dare already to challenge our government to a trial of strength and to bid defiance to the laws of our country.”
We all know that “corporate interests” are the reason 99% of our government representatives get out of bed in the morning. This sad fact, like the BP Oil Disaster is not an accident, but by design of the greed-centered operatives who care nothing for country or community, but have rigged out laws to facilitate their own gain.
Corporate interests turn the wheels of our government – well-greased, of course, with the blood of soldiers, the sweat of workers, and the tears of Mother Earth herself.
Instead of THAT conversation, we get treated to pandering placation about trips to the moon and the superstitious traditions of fishermen.
Much like George W. Bush telling Americans to “go shopping” after the September 11th attacks, Obama tells us to “pray!”
A people with no power have leaders who lie to them. Period.
That speech last night might as well been an episode of “American Idol” – pure entertainment for the huddled masses. Just a “show” that proves that the office of Presidency now exists to help the ruling class give the illusion of democracy to the dumb Sheeple they exploit.
In another time, one of our greatest Democratic Presidents, FDR respected the American People enough to plainly lay out the challenges they were up against – what he called the “old enemies of peace… business and financial monopoly, speculation, reckless banking, class antagonism, sectionalism, war profiteering.
They had begun to consider the Government of the United States as a mere appendage to their own affairs. We know now that Government by organized money is just as dangerous as Government by organized mob.
Never before in all our history have these forces been so united against one candidate as they stand today. They are unanimous in their hate for me—and I welcome their hatred.
I should like to have it said of my first Administration that in it the forces of selfishness and of lust for power met their match. I should like to have it said of my second Administration that in it these forces met their master.”
He followed his plain talk with action and the people supported him all the way. To the ruling class – including Prescott Bush and his offspring, FDR was a Traitor to His Class
To the People he was someone who “knew them.”
FDR’s response to the man-made environmental disaster of the Dust Bowl was to create the Civilian Conservation Corps. Obama’s plan? “Let us pray!”
This was the perfect opportunity for Obama to announce that he was following in FDR’s footsteps and creating a GREEN CCC.
They already hate him so why not lead with vision?
We already have a blueprint that works. They attacked FDR and he fought back exclaiming “I welcome their hatred!”
For his courage, the people stood behind FDR for 4 consecutive terms and supported him in landslide elections. The only reason FDR did not serve a 5th term was because he was dead.
Last night, the people were looking for leadership and action – not just non-specific, inoffensive rhetoric about “I welcome ideas from both parties”!!!
it’s quite clear that after 30 years of Reaganomics and assault on the FDR’s New Deal policies that created the middle class, we live under a Plutonomy.
The Democrats used to be the party that was proud to represent to People. Now they have sold the working people to the highest bidder. THAT used to be the job of Republicans but now we have 2 greed-centered parties that both represent Plutocratic interests.
Therefore, rather than plain talk about what needs to be done to wrest us from our dilemma, Obama activates our tired old collective remembrances of past glories and begs us to pray.
He might as well have expounded on the myth that has keep the underclass at bay for centuries – work hard, pray heartily and your reward will come in Heaven.

Well said Taradacktyl. I was saying to a friend of mine Sunday that because the Gulf spill is so devastating, BP’s response to it is so heinous, I saw it as real opportunity to rally the public against the corporate structure that is choking America, keeping them down and eroding their rights only to advance corporate profits but now, with a response like this, there seems to be no hope.
