Serial Plagiarist Monica Crowley Surprises By Departing Trump Job In Shame

Displaying better character than the rest of his administration, Donald Trump’s chosen communications director for the National Security Council has decided not to pursue the job after being unmasked as a serial plagiarist.

“After much reflection I have decided to remain in New York to pursue other opportunities and will not be taking a position in the incoming administration,” Crowley said in a statement to the Washington Times. “I greatly appreciate being asked to be part of President-elect Trump’s team and I will continue to enthusiastically support him and his agenda for American renewal.”

A former research assistant to disgraced President Richard Nixon in his retirement, Crowley was first spotted lifting passages without citation from an 11-year old article in the neoconservative magazine Commentary and using them for a 1999 Wall Street Journal article about her late boss.

But eight days ago, CNN revealed that she had also stolen from fellow conservative pundits, websites, and news sources to cobble together her 2012 book, What the (Bleep) Just Happened?. The book’s publisher has stopped selling it. And there was more:

Then three days later, Politico announced that Crowley had plagiarized thousands of words for her doctoral dissertation. Apparently, it takes more than three strikes for Donald Trump to say “you’re fired” to a Fox News personality.

Is Donald Trump capable of shame?

Monica Crowley’s political appointment did not have to survive a Senate confirmation hearing, so her apparent decision to decline a job with the Trump White House differs sharply from what we have come to expect from the candidacy and transition of Donald Trump.

The reality show star-turned-president elect makes a big show of being ‘politically incorrect’ by speaking of minorities in insulting terms and mocking disabled reporters. Seemingly incapable of contrition, Donald was defiant after the publication of an Access Hollywood tape in which he bragged to Billy Bush about sexual assault. Instances of plagiarism during Trump’s campaign have gone unpunished and forgotten. The list goes on.

But Trump does have his limits; for instance, he never has anything bad to say about Russian president-for-life Vladimir Putin, with whom he hopes to conclude an historic “deal.” But more to the point, Trump’s staff seems to be sightly more politically sensitive than he is.

Slightly.

The transition team had initially defended Crowley and tried to cast the evidence of plagiarism as a hit job being perpetrated on Trump. “Any attempt to discredit Monica is nothing more than a politically motivated attack that seeks to distract from the real issues facing this country,” they said.

Now the sendoff comes with a salute: “The NSC will miss the opportunity to have Monica Crowley as part of our team,” Trump National Security Adviser Michael Flynn said. “We wish her all the best in her future.”

It’s going to be a long four years.
